Third-year public relations student named Miss University of Georgia

Hanna Holley, a third-year public relations student from Dublin, was crowned Miss University of Georgia 2017 at the annual scholarship pageant held Jan. 21 in the UGA Fine Arts Auditorium. A 2014 graduate of West Laurens High School, she is the daughter of Dennis and Dawn Holley.

UGA has been named the top tier one research institution in the nation in Victory Media's Military Friendly Schools 2017 rankings. The designation recognizes the university for its outstanding commitment to and programs for student veterans and their families.

Homecoming events to start Oct. 12

"From the Classic City to the Big City" is the theme of this year's Homecoming Week festivities, which begin Oct. 12. Activities for students are scheduled throughout the week, and the weekend features events for alumni and the Oct. 17 football game against the University of Missouri, including the crowning of the Homecoming king and queen.

The Leslie K. Bates Medal of Excellence was presented to Jon Hurst, Mariah Domenech and Marvin J. Nunnally during the Multicultural Services and Programs Senior Leader Reception April 25 at the Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries. The three were honored for their commitment to UGA's multicultural community.

Professor emerita named director of academic partnerships, initiatives

Sylvia M. Hutchinson, a professor emerita, has been named director of academic partnerships and initiatives at UGA. She will join the Division of Student Affairs staff to coordinate a new strategic priority to formalize and strengthen partnerships with campus academic units, according to Victor K. Wilson, vice president for student affairs.

Tuskegee Airmen to close out Black History Month observance

Two members of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American military aviators in the American armed forces, will participate in a panel discussion on Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel. The discussion is open free to the public.
