School of Music’s Hodgson Singers win top award at international choral competition

The Hodgson Singers, the flagship choral ensemble of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, won both first prize and the Grand Prix Ave Verum at the International Choral Competition Ave Verum in Baden, Austria, in May.

Cornell faculty member named director of bands at UGA

Cynthia Johnston Turner, currently director of wind ensembles at Cornell University, has been named new director of bands at UGA.

New York Philharmonic’s principal trumpet to join music school

Philip Smith, currently the principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic, soon will be moving south to join the faculty of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music. Smith will be named the William F. and Pamela P. Prokasy Professor in the Arts within the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, pending approval by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.

Brass act

For UGA tuba player Simon Wildman, winning at the 2012 Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival held recently in Twin Lake, Mich., was the equivalent of bringing home Olympic gold—low brass style.
