John Knox, an associate professor of geography in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, was featured on NBC’s Nightly News and Today show for his research on tracking tornado debris patterns using social media.

Knox, who also is a faculty member in the atmospheric sciences program, and UGA student researchers used a Facebook page dedicated to returning lost possessions tossed dozens of miles from 2011 tornadoes in the Southeast as a tool for understanding what happens to debris taken up by tornadoes.

“We feel certain that in the long run it will be useful to understand tornado debris and where it can go,” Knox told NBC.
