Performing back flips while suspended by bungee cords all the while beating drums and creating their own music, Lelavision will present a unique blend of motion and music in its Nov. 8 and 9 performances at 7:30 p.m. in the New Dance Theatre in the dance building.
Returning for the dance department’s fifth annual Spotlight! performance, Seattle-based Lelavision Physical Music kick started the inaugural performance five years ago. Co-founded by UGA alumna Leah Mann, the group combines modern and aerial dance with one-of-a-kind musical instruments and sculptures that produce sound through the company’s motion.
Lelavision will perform 10 different pieces each night with instruments shipped in from Seattle. The pieces include Long Wave, in which a massive harp is played by dancing crew members; Thunder Wings, in which dance and spring steel flappers and aluminium rain sticks combine to produce live music; and Bungee Drumming, which combines aerial dance and music performance.
Unlike previous performances, this year’s Spotlight! performance will not be a dinner and dance, but rather two separate performances.
On Nov. 8, the Friends of Dance will host a reception from 6:15–7:15 p.m. Sales from tickets, which are $65, will be used for dance department scholarships, programming and to bring dance companies to campus. The reception includes reserved seats for the performance.
Bala Sarasvati, dance professor and co-founder of the Friends of Dance, calls the show creative, energetic and delightful. Tickets for the performance are $15 and $10 for students and senior citizens.
