University System of Kentucky denies bid to add one more university

The University of Pikeville, a private liberal arts college in Pikeville, Ky., lost its bid to join the University System of Kentucky after legislators said it would further burden the already cash-strapped system, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported.

The proposal came from former Gov. Paul E. Patton, current president of the 1,100-student university, as a means to lower the institution’s $15,250-a-year tuition. Instead, legislators have put forth a bill that would offer grants to students at four private colleges in Kentucky, including Pikeville, the Chronicle reported.
