UNC chancellor stepping down

Holden Thorp, chancellor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will step down after years of controversy at the university. Thorp, who will have served as chancellor since 2008, will resign effective June 30. The news follows some tumultuous events at UNC including state budget cuts and athletic program scandals-—including those involving football players taking gifts and getting credit for not attending classes.

Also during his tenure, the university has seen a rise in student applications and has become a top 10 university in research funding. Thorp has said he would like to stay on at UNC as a faculty member in the chemistry department.
