UGA offers summer classes as convenient option for students

Athens, Ga. – While most students consider taking a break during the summer, some students may want to squeeze in extra courses to stay on track for graduation or to get an early start on their college experience. The University of Georgia will offer summer sessions for these students in both the traditional and online formats.

UGA offers summer classes on all campuses (Athens, Griffin, Gwinnett and Tifton) for students wanting the traditional class experience. UGA students, as well as transient students, can experience smaller classes in a more relaxed learning environment during the summer.

UGA’s new online courses offer flexibility for students on the go. Thirty-six new high-demand undergraduate courses in a wide variety of subject areas, in addition to other UGA undergraduate and graduate online courses will be available. Transient students-students from other colleges or universities, including those participating in a study abroad program-may also take advantage of UGA’s online courses for college credit. The admission application deadline for summer transients is May 15.

New UGA students also have options. Transfer students can get started on their UGA experience by taking a summer class on campus or online. In addition, first-year students have the unique option of participating in the Freshman College Summer Experience. Students move into Creswell Hall at the end of June, take six semester hours, and get to know the campus and make personal connections before the remaining students arrive in August. The deadline for registering for FCSE is May 17.

Early registration for current students begins April 3 for summer classes, with regular registration beginning May 15 and continuing until classes begin for each session. All students must be officially admitted to the University of Georgia in order to register for summer classes. Students are charged per credit hour up to 14 hours; any credit accumulation of 15 hours or more will be charged a flat tuition rate. Tuition for online classes is the same as classes in the traditional format.

As in previous years, students can use the HOPE Scholarship to help pay for summer classes. However, new changes this year require all recipients of the HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid form online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.
