Study: Many students still ineligible for tuition tax breaks

A large number of undergraduate students remain ineligible to receive higher education tax benefits, according to a new study completed by New America think tank, a nonpartisan organization that focuses on public policy issues.

The study used U.S. Department of Education data to analyze how student eligibility for tax breaks or benefits varied between institutions of higher education.

Researchers found that 40 percent of undergrad students aren’t eligible or didn’t file taxes. They explained this ineligibility is because many students’ tuition and fees are covered by financial aid, so they don’t have any out-of-pocket expenses to claim.
