State report: Florida A&M lacked institutional controls for hazing

Florida’s State University System released a report criticizing Florida A&M University in response to the 2011 death of drum major Robert Champion in the university’s marching band due to a violent hazing ritual, according to a story by the Orlando Sentinel.

The report, released in December following a yearlong investigation, faulted Florida A&M administration for lacking institutional controls to detect, prevent and fight hazing.

The report comes just weeks after the university was placed on probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges for violations involving student safety.
