‘Research misconduct’ reported at University of Utah laboratory

An internal review at the University of Utah found that researchers in a hematology study engaged “in research misconduct by reckless disregard of accepted practices” for misrepresenting lab data in 11 published papers, according to a university report.

Ivana DeDomenico, an assistant pathology professor and lead author of some of the papers, has been fired. The head of the lab, Jerry Kaplan, retired during the investigation.

The problems with data seemed to be an issue of negligence rather than plagiarism, a university official told the Salt Lake Tribune.
