‘Ready, Steady, Vote!’ aims to educate, entertain citizenry during election season

This election season, the Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies will host “Ready, Steady, Vote!” a series of events focusing on preparing the citizenry for the various local, state and national political races.

Open free to the public, the events will take place in the exhibit area on the second floor of the new Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries. Free parking is available in the Hull Street Parking Deck.

Community forums will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. on Sept. 11 (“America’s Role in the World”), Sept. 18 (“Economic Security: How Should We Take Charge of Our Future?”) and Sept. 25 (“Immigration in America: How Do We Fix a System in Crisis?”).

On Oct. 11, a screening of the 2000 film The Contender will be held from 6:30-9 p.m. On Oct. 16, a presidential debate watch will be held from 8-10:30 p.m. Jamie Carson, an associate professor of political science in the School of Public and International Affairs, will introduce the town-hall style debate and facilitate discussion.

On Nov. 1, a screening of the 1972 film The Candidate will be held from 6:30-9 p.m. Brian Drake, a professor of history, will provide a brief introduction before the movie starts. On Nov. 5, a reception will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. for the opening of exhibition for Doors. The mural was created by UGA art professor emeritus Art Rosenbaum. “Ready, Steady, Vote!” will close Nov. 6 with “On the Stump! Classic Campaign Speeches” from noon-2 p.m. Members of UGA’s Demosthenian Literary Society will re-enact campaign speeches atop the stump inlaid in the lobby floor of the exhibit gallery.
