Publishers sue Georgia State University for copyright violations

Three academic publishers sued Georgia State University on April 15 claiming “systematic, widespread and unauthorized copying and distribution of a vast amount of copyrighted works,” The Chronicle of Higher Education reported.

Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press and SAGE Publications allege that the university allowed and encouraged professors to distribute required reading assignments online, going beyond fair use practices. The Association of American Publishers, which supports the lawsuit, said the practice of disseminating copyrighted works electronically has become a major problem for university presses.
