President vetoes University Council bill

Saying he supports “the intent and spirit of this item,” UGA President Michael F. Adams vetoed a University Council proposition passed March 23 that would make the body more involved in the search for a new provost.
“Vetoing a portion of the recommendation is not an option to me, so I am vetoing it in its entirety,” Adams said in a statement.

The bill would have required the Provost Search Advisory Committee to make regular reports to the council, finalists for the position of provost will appear before the council, and the council to take a vote on a finalist, which the committee would consider in making its decision.

Adams said the last item caused concern. The rest of the proposition, he said in the statement, will be carried out despite the veto.

“(Committee head) Dr. William Potter has pledged his commitment to keep the council well informed of the committee’s progress and to report the short list of candidates to the council as requested. A Web site [has] been developed to keep the university community informed of the search process, as well,” he said. “My office will ensure that candidates’ visits include well-advertised schedules of the on-campus activities, including presentations before the council membership, which will be open to any member of the university community or general public.”
