Portrait of Sen. Saxby Chambliss unveiled

In May, U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss was honored by the University of Georgia Libraries and the Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies during a ceremony unveiling his portrait in recognition of his services as senate agriculture committee chairman. Chambliss served as chairman during the 109th Congress (2005-2007) and is the only senator since 1947 to have chaired a full standing Senate committee after serving in the Senate for just two years.

The portrait, property of UGA, will hang in the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry hearing room located in the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C. Chambliss previously served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Georgia’s 8th Congressional district. Twenty-one years after Sen. Chambliss leaves office, the portrait will be displayed in the Russell Library as part of the permanent collection. Chambliss, a 1966 UGA alumnus, already has committed his official papers to be archived at the Russell Library.
