Northwestern U. professor will discuss Iraq, crimes of war at Talarico Lecture

John Hagan, the John D. MacArthur Professor of Sociology and Law at Northwestern University, will deliver the Susette M. Talarico Lecture  April 26 at 3:30 p.m. in Dean Rusk Hall’s Larry Walker Room. His lecture, titled “Who Are the Criminals? Iraq and the Crimes of Pre-Emptive War,” is free and open to the public.

Hagan is co-director of the Center on Law and Globalization at the American Bar Foundation in Chicago. His research with a network of scholars spans topics from causes of crime to war crimes and human rights.

From 2003-2005, he pioneered the application of advanced crime measurement techniques to the study of genocide in his work on violence in Darfur and in the Balkans. In 2009, he received the Stockholm Prize in Criminology for his research regarding the causes of and prevention of genocide.

The lecture is co-sponsored by the criminal justice studies program, the School of Public and International Affairs’ political science department and the sociology department in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.
