Newly acquired TV station offers increased local news, election coverage

WNEG-TV, channel 32, the university’s newly acquired television station, now offers Northeast Georgia’s only 10 p.m. newscast covering local news. WNEG-TV will offer in-depth coverage of local elections Nov. 4 from 6-11 p.m. with live anchors in both Athens and Toccoa.

The commercial station, operated by the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, serves Northeast Georgia with high-quality, local interest programming, built primarily around local news and public affairs programming, and featuring UGA academic, cultural and athletic events.

WNEG will offer broad regional coverage of all local races within the Northeast Georgia area on Election Day. The evening coverage will feature political commentators and live updates from throughout the region. An hour-long election special covering local, state and national elections will air at 10 p.m.

The television station was acquired by the University of Georgia Research Foundation earlier this year. UGA’s first year of ownership will focus on programming and technical transition. The station will continue to operate out of its Toccoa studios until transferring to studios at the Grady College building on the UGA campus in approximately 2009.
