New York University officials debate returning multi million-dollar donation

Administrators and faculty at New York University are deciding whether to return a $200 million donation from the Leon Levy Foundation to create an Institute for the Study of the Ancient World.

After receiving the donation in March, university officials learned the foundation is accused of collecting antiquities through illicit trade, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. While the foundation denies the claim, some faculty members are urging the university to return the gift.

An archaeology professor has resigned in protest despite approval from a group of seven faculty members who were consulted before accepting the donation.
