MIT professor ends hunger strike

A Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor has ended a nearly two-week hunger strike he was on until the institute’s administration corrected “wrongful deeds” he says played a part in his denial of tenure, according to the Associated Press.

James L. Sherely, an associate professor of biological engineering, told AP that he would not eat until MIT officials admitted racism was involved in his denial of tenure. Fasting since Feb. 5, Sherely end his hunger strike on Feb. 16.

MIT is now formally examining hiring, advancement and experiences of minority faculty members, but says the timing of the examination in unrelated to Sherely’s hunger strike.
