A memorial service for the late Larry Munson will be held Dec. 10 at 1 p.m. in Sanford Stadium. Munson, the legendary radio broadcast and voice of the football team for 42 years, died at his Athens home Nov. 20 following complications from pneumonia. He was 89.
Gates for the service open at noon. Free parking is available in all surface lots and Tate deck. In case of inclement weather, the memorial service will be moved to Stegeman Coliseum.
UGA President Michael F. Adams said, “Larry Munson exemplified the excellence that we believe is the symbol of all the University of Georgia does today. He was loved by thousands of alumni and friends, and was completely devoted to this university and all its athletic teams. He will be greatly missed by all of us.”
Born Sept. 28, 1922, in Minneapolis, Munson was an alumnus of Moorehead State Teachers College in Moorehead, Minn. After serving as a U.S. Army medic in World War II, he went to broadcasting school and then worked at a small radio station in Devil’s Lake, N.D., before announcing for the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons, and UGA football and men’s basketball programs. He also hosted various sports talk shows on radio and TV. Munson retired from sports broadcasting, a career that spanned more than 60 years, in 2008. His dramatic delivery, along with an unabashed partisanship for the Bulldogs, endeared him to generations.
In lieu of flowers, the Munson family requests that donations be made to the Noah Harris Cheerleading Scholarship. Checks may be made payable to the UGA Foundation with the designation “Noah Harris Cheerleading Scholarship in memory of Larry Munson.” They may be sent to the Georgia Bulldog Club, PO Box 1472, Athens, GA 30603.
