To make its math courses more relevant to the future careers of its students, the University System of Maryland is piloting a program that allows liberal arts students to take a remedial statistics class instead of algebra, according to The Baltimore Sun.
The result of a $3 million federal grant, the program will be implemented at 12 institutions where the administrations will follow the progress of students enrolled in the remedial course into a traditional statistics class. Administrators hope to have more than 1,500 students take the pilot course.
