Liberty University, the Lynchburg, Va., Baptist college founded by the late televangelist Jerry Falwell, has become the largest private, nonprofit university in the nation thanks to a boom in online education, according to a story in The Washington Post.
In the last six years, the once small bible college has doubled its enrollment twice to more than 74,000. More than 80 percent of enrolled students are working toward online degrees.
Jerry Falwell Jr., the university’s chancellor and president, told The Post that his goal for Liberty is to carry out his father’s vision: “To create for evangelical Christians what Notre Dame is for Catholics and Brigham Young is for Mormons.”
