A federal jury found that Creighton University discriminated against Michael Argenyi, a deaf medical student, by not providing him with equipment and interpreters for communicating with patients and attending lectures.
During his clinical training, university officials refused his requests for interpreters to communicate with patients even though he offered to pay for them himself. The university expressed concerns about patient confidentiality. As result, Argenyi took a leave of absence from the program.
While the jury ruled against the university, it did not award damages to Argenyi because they found the discrimination was not intentional.
