All eight Ivy League head football coaches have voted to ban tackling during regular season practice. Research shows that most sports-related concussions in college happen during practice, not in the games.
“We’re not trying to change the nature of the game; we’re just trying to make it safer,” Robin Harris, the executive director of the Ivy League, told The New York Times.
The move goes one step further from a decision by the management of NFL teams to limit full-contact practice during the regular season. The Ivy League presidents and athletic directors have to approve the decision before it takes effect.
