Historians across the U.S. have decided to create a specific, agreed-upon framework of expectations for what a history degree should signify about what its recipients can do and have knowledge of, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported.

The American Historical Association announced this three-year effort among faculty, employers, alumni, students and others as part of a Lumina Foundation for Education’s Tuning project. The announcement comes as historians face new pressures to document their programs’ value and demonstrate how they contribute to civic life and the public good, the Chronicle reported.
