Harvard president calls it quits

In a public letter dated Feb. 22 Lawrence Summers, president of Harvard University, resigned his post effective June 30.

“I have reluctantly concluded that the rifts between me and segments of the arts-and-sciences faculty make it infeasible for me to advance the agenda of renewal that I see as crucial to Harvard’s future,” he wrote.

Summers faced pressure throughout the past year, including a no confidence vote from arts and sciences faculty after making conjectures about the lack of women in science and math fields. Former Harvard president Derek Bok will replace Summers temporarily.
