Georgia Brass Band to perform in Hodgson Hall

The Performing Arts Center will present the Georgia Brass Band, the state’s premier British style brass band, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall. The concert will feature British cornet virtuoso Richard Marshall as guest soloist. The concert is free, but tickets are required.

Founded in 1999, the Georgia Brass Band is made up of professional and amateur musicians from throughout the Atlanta area. The band is patterned after British brass bands that came into prominence in the early 1800s, the result of improved manufacturing techniques developed during the Industrial Revolution.

Founding member Joe Johnson serves as the band’s music director.

The Georgia Brass Band has earned an international reputation for excellence through its successes at the annual North American Brass Band Association Championships. Its performances have earned accolades and rave reviews in national and international brass publications, including Brass Band Bridge and British Bandsman.

Marshall is currently principal cornet of the Black Dyke Band. Prior to his appointment, he served for 10 years as principal cornet with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. He is a cornet tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music, the Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He has performed throughout the world at concert venues such as the Sydney Opera House and New York’s Carnegie Hall.

A pre-concert lecture with PAC director George C. Foreman and  UGA faculty member David Zerkel will be held at 2:15 p.m.
