Former UGA swimmer named 2012-2013 SEC Female Athlete of the Year

Allison Schmitt, who led the women’s swimming and diving team at UGA to the national championship after winning five medals in the Olympics, is the 2012-2013 Roy F. Kramer Southeastern Conference Female Athlete of the Year.

The SEC Male Athlete of the Year Award was presented to Johnny Manziel, quarterback for Texas A&M.

At the 2012 Olympics in London, Schmitt won three gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal. The Canton, Mich., native returned to UGA for her senior year and helped lead the women’s team to SEC and NCAA titles. Schmitt also earned the Honda Sports Award as the nation’s top swimmer.

Schmitt is the fifth UGA student-athlete to earn the SEC Female Athlete of the Year recognition. She joins golfer Vicki Goetze (1992), basketball player Saudia Roundtree (1996), swimmer Kristy Kowal (2000) and gymnast Courtney Kupets (2009).
