In a USA Today article about food safety regulations, Michael Doyle, Regents Professor of Food Microbiology and director of UGA’s Center for Food Safety, argues that the Food and Drug Administration has been more aggressive in going after food producers accused of selling tainted food under President Barack Obama.
The story followed the announcement of criminal charges against two cantaloupe farmers in Colorado accused of being responsible for a 2011 listeria outbreak that killed 33 people.
“I think the FDA is sending a strong message that the produce industry is going to have to raise the bar to ensure the safety of basically, ready-to-consume foods,” Doyle told USA Today.
