Hank Klibanoff, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and the James M. Cox Jr. Professor of Journalism at Emory University, will deliver the 2013 Mary Frances Early Lecture April 2 at 4 p.m. in the Chapel. The 13th annual lecture honors the first African-American to earn a degree from UGA and her dedication toward making UGA an institution of higher learning for all people.
Klibanoff won the Pulitzer Prize in history for his book The Race Beat: The Press, the Civil Rights Struggle and the Awakening of a Nation, which explores news coverage of civil rights from the 1930s through the late 1960s. He also is the managing editor of the Civil Rights Cold Case Project, which uses investigative reporting to search for the truth behind unsolved racial murders that took place during the civil rights era in the South. Klibanoff joined Emory after a 36-year career in newspapers in Mississippi and at The Boston Globe, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
