EcoFocus, Ciné and The National will present a special screening of the environmental documentary General Orders No. 9 on Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. at Ciné. The event is part of the EcoFocus initiative by the Odum School of Ecology to bring awareness to environmental issues and ecological science.
General Orders No. 9 is an award-winning experimental documentary about loss and change in the South. Using images, poetry and music, the film explores the conflict between nature and human progress as urban sprawl overtakes the Southern landscape.
Filmmaker Robert Persons grew up in Georgia and spent 11 years making General Orders No. 9, his first film. It received the Kodak Vision Award for best cinematography at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah; the Best Cinematography Award from the RiverRun International Film Festival in Winston-Salem, N.C.; and the Soul of Southern Film Award from the Indie Memphis Film Festival in Memphis, Tenn.
The evening at Ciné will start with a reception catered by The National at 6 p.m.; the screening will begin at 7 p.m. Chris Hoke, the film’s soundtrack composer, will provide live musical accompaniment. The film will be followed by a question-and-answer session with Persons.
