Joseph C. Hermanowicz, associate professor of sociology, is editor of the new book The American Academic Profession: Transformation in Contemporary Higher Education.

The academic profession, like many others, is rapidly being transformed. This book explores the current challenges to the profession and their broad implications for American higher education. Examining what professors do and how academia is changing, contributors to this volume assess current and potential threats to the
profession.

Leading scholars in sociology and higher education explore such topics as structural and cognitive change, socialization and deviance, career development, and professional autonomy and regulation. It also has a section on contemporary and historical views.

A comprehensive analysis of the significant questions facing this crucial profession, The American Academic Profession is intended for students, scholars, administrators and policy makers concerned with the future of the academy.

The book is based on a 2008 State of the Art Conference held at UGA, co-sponsored by the department of sociology and the Institute of Higher Education. The book is 392 pages and includes illustrations.

Hermanowicz is also the author of Lives in Science: How Institutions Affect Academic Careers.
