Book features Little St. Simons paintings

The Wild Treasury of Nature: A Portrait of Little St. Simons Island
Philip Juras
University of Georgia Press
$32.95

The 52 paintings gathered in The Wild Treasury of Nature (available March 1) reveal as never before the wild beauty of Little St. Simons, an undeveloped barrier island on the Georgia coast.

In showing the island’s marshes and tidal creeks, shrub lands and forests, and dunes and beaches, artist Philip Juras, who received a bachelor’s degree in drawing and painting and a master’s degree in landscape architecture from UGA, helps readers understand the natural and historical forces continually at work on this unique place.

The writings that accompany Juras’ paintings, which include chapters from Dorinda G. Dallmeyer, the director of the Environmental Ethics Certificate program at the UGA College of Environment and Design, and Janice Simon, the Meigs Professor of Art History at UGA’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, describe the natural history and unique cultural past of Little St. Simons.
