Afghan student allowed to appeal death sentence for criticizing Islam

A student sentenced to death for spreading feminist criticism of Islam at Afghanistan’s Balkh University has been granted an appeal, according to Bloomberg News.

Journalism student Sayad Parwez Kambakhsh, who denies downloading and distributing anti-Islamic material, was transferred to a prison in Kabul and given promises by government officials that she would be freed. President Hamid Karzai spoke out in February to say that the sentence would likely not be carried out, but this marks the first step toward freedom since her incarceration March 28.
