Advisory committee for presidential transition concludes its work

The university’s Presidential Transition Advisory Committee concluded its work in May after a series of informal meetings to gather diverse perspectives on the university and its teaching, research and service mission.

The 12-member committee was appointed in February by President-elect Jere Morehead to foster discussion on key issues facing the university and to share ideas for a successful university presidency. The group included administrators, faculty and staff representing a range of campus units as well as the chair of the UGA Foundation Board of Trustees. To gain a broad perspective, the committee consulted with additional faculty, staff, students and alumni.

“The work of the Presidential Transition Advisory Committee has reaffirmed my belief that some of the best ideas for advancing this institution come from a participatory approach that draws upon the experiences of our faculty, staff, students and alumni,” said Morehead, who will become the university’s 22nd president July 1.

Among the many topics discussed were raising the university’s academic profile, enhancing its research enterprise, improving efficiency and fostering engagement with industry. In addition, the group explored ideas for reinforcing the university’s land-grant mission of service to Georgia and its 159 counties.

The committee also offered suggestions for Morehead’s schedule of public events and meetings in the early days, weeks and months of his presidency.

“I appreciate the thoughtful input that the members of this committee have provided to me,” Morehead said. “The university is poised to make an even greater impact on the state we serve thanks to their work and the dedication of our faculty, staff and students.”
