President Bush to ask for $2.6 billion increase in Pell Grant program funds

President Bush plans to ask Congress for a $2.6 billion increase in 2009 for the Pell Grant program, which aids college students from low-income families, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported.

The White House budget proposal asks for almost $60 billion for education programs of all levels. The maximum Pell Grant is presently estimated to reach $4,731, but with the proposed increase, the maximum Pell Grant would reach between $5,100–$5,400.
