Women’s History Month will focus on female education, empowerment

“Women’s Education—Women’s Empowerment” is the national theme of Women’s History Month, which will be celebrated in March at UGA. Numerous events, including a keynote address by Elizabeth Tisdell, professor of adult education at Pennsylvania State University, are planned.

Tisdell is the author of Exploring Spirituality and Culture in Adult and Higher Education as well as the co-author of many other books and articles. She also is one of the first two students to receive a graduate certificate in women’s studies at UGA.

Her lecture, “Spiritual Development and the Pursuit of Wisdom in a Cultural Context: A Longitudinal Study of Women Adult Educators for Social Change” will take place
March 22 at 3 p.m. in the Special Collections Libraries lecture hall, Room 271. A reception will follow the lecture in the rotunda. The lecture and reception are open free to the public.

The observance of Women’s ­History Month will open with a panel discussion featuring staff of the Jeannette Rankin Foundation and recipients of its Women’s Scholarship Fund. The discussion will focus on women’s education and women’s empowerment. Open free to the public, the discussion will take place March 1 at 5:30 p.m. in Room 214 of the Miller Learning Center.

The Institute for Women’s Studies also will host a film festival in conjunction with Women’s History Month.  A complete list of the films and their screening information is available online at http://iws.uga.edu/events. Each screening is free, open to the public and a blue card event.

The Institute for Women’s Studies also will be collaborating with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute for the Friday Speaker Series lectures in March. Each talk also will be part of a Women’s History Month-themed course with the organization and will feature Diane Morrow, associate professor of history; Sharon Nickols, the Janette Barber Professor of Housing and Consumer Economics; and Barbara Schuster, dean of the Georgia Health Sciences University/UGA Medical Partnership.  The lectures will take place in Room 250 of the Miller Learning Center at 12:20 p.m. A reception will follow each lecture in the center’s north tower.

Women’s History Month at UGA is sponsored by the Institute for Women’s Studies, part of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.
