Violinist to open Performing Arts Center season

The Performing Arts Center opens its 2006-2007 season with the Athens debut of American violinist Joan Kwuon on Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall. Tickets are $19 (rear balcony) and $24 (orchestra/front balcony).

Discounts are available for groups, and tickets are half-price for UGA students with a valid ID.

Hailed as “virtuosic,” “heart-wrenching” and “a revelation” by critics around the world, Kwuon will be accompanied by pianist Christopher Oldfather in a program featuring works by Igor Stravinsky, J.S. Bach, César Franck and Henryk Wieniawski.

At the invitation of Sir André Previn, Kwuon made her solo debut at the Tanglewood Music Festival, where she was praised as a “fiery player with a commanding technique” by the Boston Globe. Since then she has appeared in concert halls worldwide including engagements with London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo’s NHK Symphony and the Moscow State Symphony.

A pre-concert lecture, which is open to the public, will be offered at 2:15 p.m.
