The University Alliance, a partnership between UGA and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, has awarded
14 University Alliance Grants for the 2009-2010 academic year.
The grants, ranging from $2,000-$8,000, will support outreach, recruitment and retention projects by academic professionals, student organizations as well as academic and public service faculty members.
Funded projects include programs to increase high school preparedness in the physical sciences, to expose students to careers in agricultural fields through a six-week research intensive internship, to develop an ongoing outreach and recruitment strategy for high school students as well as support parents when their students prepare applications to attend UGA, to increase academic preparedness for middle school students and their parents, and to create a network for current UGA students and their parents through mentorship of previous participants.
“The university’s reach into a growing segment of our community continues to expand through our partnership with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund,” said Art Dunning, vice president for public service and outreach. “I am pleased we can continue to provide support to academic units, public service faculty and student organizations who wish to create academic opportunities for Latino students. Our partnership with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund supports our mission of strengthening connections to communities in the state of Georgia as well as collaboration among UGA’s outreach, research and teaching missions.”

In its 34-year history, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund has awarded more than $250 million in scholarships to more than 90,000 students in need. The University Alliance grant is funded by the Lilly Endowment.
