The UGA Wind Ensemble has an upcoming tour to Paris and Switzerland.

The UGA Wind Ensemble, under director of bands John Lynch, will present the concert “Celebrations” on Oct. 13 at 8 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center as part of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s 2nd Thursday Scholarship Series.

Tickets for the concert are $18, $5 for UGA students, and available through the Performing Arts Center box office at 706-542-4400.

The concert will present the new work From the Language of Shadows by award-winning Seattle composer Huck Hodge and accompany a silent film based on the tale of Faust, in celebration of Halloween.

The group also will perform H. Owen Reed’s iconic symphony La Fiesta Mexicana. At age 101, Reed and his wife have recently moved to Athens and will be in attendance. Handel’s joyous Music for the Royal Fireworks and Edward Elgar’s  Enigma Variations guest conducted by Scott Jones, UGA’s new assistant director of bands, will round out the program.

The 50-member, all-student Wind Ensemble champions the performance of new music and, under Lynch, has a history of commissioning many of the rising stars of composition. In addition to premiering new works, the ensemble tours nationally and internationally, hosts guest artists and records on the Naxos label. Their most recent recording in winter 2011 will be available in spring 2012.

“The band is very excited to play one of Mr. Reed’s most well-regarded compositions, and especially with him in attendance,” Lynch said. “This concert program is so eclectic, it will be like a rollercoaster ride and with the striking imagery of this dramatic, silent film added in, it will be a truly multi-sensory experience.”
