Joshua Bynum, an assistant professor of trombone in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, will present a faculty recital of works for trombone on Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. in Ramsey Concert Hall of the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10, or $5 for UGA students with ID.
Bynum’s recital begins with William Goldstein’s Colloquy, a work he calls “exciting and unapologetically optimistic.” Written during the 1960s for the U.S. Army Band, the piece is a staple of the trombone repertoire.
Following the Colloquy, Bynum will present a bit of vintage Americana, Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs.
“The Old American Songs represent American nationalism at its best,” Bynum said. “The bulk of these songs have been passed down through the generations from various sources and are at the very heart of our country’s heritage.”
Rounding out the performance is Paul Hindemith’s Sonata for Trombone and Piano, which Bynum calls, “one of the cornerstones in the repertoire,” and selections from a work by French composer Jean-Michel Defaye, entitled A le Maniere de. . . , a set of short works, each written in the style of a different composer.
Bynum earned his bachelor’s from Jacksonville State University, his master’s from Temple University and his doctorate in trombone performance and pedagogy from the University of Iowa, where he was a recipient of the prestigious Iowa Performance Fellowship. Prior to coming to UGA, he taught at Ouachita Baptist University. As a performer, he has held positions with the Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Tuscaloosa, Gadsen and Pine Bluff symphony orchestras.
