Times are a-changing

A Time magazine article about changing attitudes in the Southern U.S. toward remembering the Civil War quoted James C. Cobb, UGA’s B. Phinizy Spalding Distinguished Professor in the History of the American South.

“Coming out of the experience of the Civil War and Southern Reconstruction, there was a sense of wounded pride and grievance,” said Cobb, who is also the author of Away Down South: A History of Southern Identity. “Time has passed. To uphold the Confederacy in this way has become a fairly extreme position.”
