Stephen Berry, an associate professor in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences’ history department, received $85,000 from the American Council of Learned Societies for his project, “CSI Dixie: Race, the Body Politic and the View from the South’s County Coroner’s Offices, 1840-1880.” Berry’s project will digitize, transcribe, index and make available and searchable via the Web the extant coroners’ reports for five South Carolina counties for those 40 years. Berry, who holds the Amanda and Greg Gregory Chair in the Civil War Era, is also co-director of the Center for Virtual History.
