The College of Environment and Design’s Circle Gallery will host the exhibition Edward Daugherty: Learning from the Land from Sept. 28 through Oct. 25.
The exhibition will include works by Atlanta landscape architect Edward Daugherty. An opening reception will be held in the gallery Sept. 28 following his lecture at 5 p.m. in 204 Caldwell Hall.
Daugherty is one of the most significant post-World War II landscape architects in Atlanta and the Southeast. He has designed residential, commercial and institutional landscapes in eight states and abroad, and is still practicing today. Daugherty became a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1971 and, among other tributes, received an Award of Excellence in 1987 from the Atlanta Urban Design Commission for his lifetime contribution to Atlanta.
His lecture and the exhibition will feature numerous Atlanta landmarks, including designs he did for All Saints Episcopal Church, Trinity Presbyterian Church, the Marietta town square, Canterbury Court, the Cathedral of St. Philip, Hahn Woods, and small and large residences.
A graduate of Harvard University, Daugherty attended UGA briefly during the 1950s and studied under Hubert Bond Owens, the founder of the school of landscape architecture. In Athens, Daugherty assisted landscape architect Thomas Church on his design for the original landscape at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel. He has been a mentor to numerous graduates of UGA’s environment and design college.
The Circle Gallery, located in the Owens Library in Caldwell Hall, is open weekdays 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m.
