The College of Veterinary Medicine will host its annual Science of Veterinary Medicine Research Day on Oct. 13.  Admission is free, and the event is open to the public.

This year’s symposium opens at 10 a.m. with a brief welcome followed by a keynote address from Dr. George Lees, a professor of veterinary internal medicine at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Dr. Lees’ lecture, entitled “Studies of Canine Hereditary Nephropathy: A Clinical Research Story with Happy Endings,” will focus on his work in hereditary kidney disease in dogs.

Other speakers include Mark Estes, a professor of infectious diseases at the veterinary medicine college, who will discuss vaccine development for foot and mouth disease; Dr. Chad Schmiedt, an assistant professor of soft tissue surgery at the college, who will discuss his work in feline renal transplants; Dr. Shannon Holmes, an assistant professor of radiology, who will talk about research applications for Magnetic Resonance Imaging; and Dr. Stephen Divers, a professor of zoological and exotic animal medicine at the college, who will discuss using endoscopy in research.

Registration for the symposium begins at 9 a.m. With the exception of the keynote address, all scheduled lectures will be held from 3:10-4:10 p.m.

From late morning through early afternoon, UGA veterinary students, graduate students, interns, residents and faculty will present basic and clinical research that has been conducted at UGA’s veterinary medicine college.
