UGA President Jere W. Morehead spoke to the Staff Council during its March 1 meeting and announced plans for a third Staff Appreciation Day, which will be held May 11 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the intramural fields.

In addition, Morehead reiterated the importance of and discussed work on the three main issues he outlined during his State of the University address: increasing scholarship support for students, enhancing learning environments and solving grand challenges. About the Georgia Commitment Scholarship Program, he said, “This kind of program speaks volumes to me. I was a first-generation college student myself, and I want to see us open additional avenues for students to be able to come to Georgia who could not otherwise attend this institution.”

Morehead also spoke about the Women’s Staff Leadership Institute, a continuation of efforts to seek out ways to support women’s leadership initiatives in conjunction with the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and Human Resources, saying the goal is to “encourage women to develop their leadership skills and careers at the University of Georgia” and be “one more positive step related to recruitment, hiring, career development, work/life balance and developing the future leaders of our staff.”

Morehead also took questions from council members on a number of topics including salaries, parking, issues facing higher education, experiential learning and communications issues.
