Denmark has made a 180-degree turn from a nation with a surge of salmonella infections to near eradication of the bacteria in chicken, according to an article by The Oregonian.
Scott Russell, a poultry processing professor in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, said Denmark’s model would be difficult to replicate in the U.S.
Poultry experts say the U.S. chicken industry is too big and reforms would be too expensive.
“It is very impressive, but it’s not feasible in the United States,” Russell said of Denmark’s eradication program.
There are an estimated 1 million cases of food poisoning related to salmonella in the U.S. a year, according to the article.
