Eight UGA faculty members have been named Service-Learning Fellows for the 2010-2011 academic year.
“Academic service-learning integrates organized service activities that meet community-identified needs into academic courses as a way to enhance understanding of academic content, teach civic responsibility and provide mutual benefit to the community,” said Shannon O. Wilder, director of the Office of Service-Learning.
The 2010-2011 Service-Learning Fellows, their faculty rank, academic field and project are:
• Paul Boumbulian, OneAthens health professional, public health. Boumbulian plans to integrate service-learning pedagogy into his course, “Advanced Service-Learning in Health Policy and Management.”
• Thomas Lawrence, public service associate, biological and agricultural engineering. Lawrence’s course, “Sustainable Design,” will employ service-learning through interdisciplinary student projects such as conducting post-occupancy evaluations of UGA campus buildings seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification.
• Sungkyung Lee, assistant professor, environment and design. “Sustainability in Design” is a landscape architecture design studio in which faculty and students will engage in community-based learning through an investigation of parks and urban infrastructures.
• Deanna McEwen, public service assistant, pharmacy. Students enrolled in “Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience” will partner with pediatric camps, indigent care programs, migrant worker camps and the American Red Cross disaster preparedness program to develop hands-on knowledge of various disease states.
• Shari Miller, assistant professor, social work. Miller plans to enhance her course, “Environmental Justice and Development: Roles of Social Workers and Potential for Social Change,” through a service-learning component that focuses on sustainable school gardens and local food issues.
• Laurel Boykin Murrow, assistant professor, MCG/UGA Medical Partnership. Murrow is designing a year-long service-learning project in which student teams will be matched with community partners to investigate and summarize a community health problem, then they will develop and implement a responsive health promotion and disease prevention project.
• Channette Romero, assistant professor, English. Romero plans to incorporate service-learning into “Literatures of the Caribbean.”
• Stephanie Tingler, associate professor, music. Students enrolled in “Vocal Pedagogy” will learn about music instruction through hands-on teaching to individuals at East Jackson, Hart and Winder-Barrow high schools and in Oglethorpe County.
