Observatory open house

The UGA Observatory will hold its monthly open house Feb. 25.

At 7 p.m. in Room 202 of the Physics Building, Roger C. Hunter, an alumnus and project manager for the Kepler Mission for NASA, will give a 40-minute talk on NASA’s Kepler Science Mission. The Kepler spacecraft has recently surveyed a section of the Milky Way and has discovered more than 1,200 planetary candidates.

If the skies are clear, the observing program will begin at 8 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Physics Building. The university’s large, enclosed 24-inch telescope will be trained on the planet Jupiter and on other celestial sights.

Several smaller telescopes will also be set up on the roof of the Physics Building. If the weather is cloudy, Hunter will give a second presentation at 8 p.m. For more details, contact Loris Magnani at loris@physast.uga.edu.
