Kevin DeWeaver, professor and Ph.D. program director in the School of Social Work, died April 21 after a year-long struggle with cancer. He was 60.

DeWeaver joined the School of Social Work as an assistant professor in 1985 and over his 26-year tenure, served on more than 40 doctoral committees-the most of any professor in the school. Director of the Ph.D. program since 2006, DeWeaver previously served as director of the bachelor’s degree program and taught courses to undergraduate social work students.

DeWeaver’s research focused primarily on mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. He also examined social work in rural communities, case management and social work education.

A memorial mass for DeWeaver was held May 3 at UGA’s Catholic Center.
