John McKissick, a professor of agricultural and applied economics, has been named the first Distinguished Professor of Agricultural Marketing in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

The professorship was established by an initial endowment from the Milton M. Ratner Foundation. It was approved by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents and went into effect July 1.

“John has a wealth of knowledge and expertise in ag marketing,” said Fred White, head of the agricultural and applied economics department. “He has been recognized by the national agricultural economics community. He is a very dedicated and highly energetic professional.”

Previously McKissick won the highest Extension awards from the American Agricultural Economics Association for Livestock Marketing and for National Option Market Education Materials.

He also serves as the director of the Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development and is the UGA Cooperative Extension program coordinator for the agricultural and applied economics department.

McKissick oversees the design of economic development and marketing programs for Georgia’s farmers and agribusinesses. He also researches new methods of increasing their profitability.
